United Airlines Menus Gets A Facelift

I've posted quite a few pictures of United Airlines menus (United Airline Global First Menu & United Global First Lounge Menu) but on a recent trip to LA in business class, they handed out new menus. I'm fond of the newer design. It's smaller, sleek, printed on United's signature blue heavy card stock, single page and has a modern design. The menus featured below are Winter 2016 New York - San Francisco - Los Angeles routes. One is a breakfast menu and the other lunch.

Here is the previous menu for the same route. It's a small menu booklet that either had a gray/white or blue/white cover with names of cities printed on glossy paper that was a little flimsy. Featured below is the breakfast menu.

Also getting a facelift is the economy and economy plus menus. Before, the food and drink selections were at the back of the Hemispheres magazine, but now it has a stand alone menu without the articles. It reminds me of a Duty Free magazine but with a menu because you can order food and also shop for items using miles.

Backstreet Cafe

I had high hopes for my recent Houston, TX., trip. 1) I was attempting to BQ (Boston Qualify) at the Houston Marathon; 2) Couldn't wait to eat Texas BBQ; and 3) Very excited to support and see my good friend, Maria, run her first marathon with her husband. Well, 2 out of 3 wasn't so bad. Maria did complete her first marathon (CONGRATS, MARIA & ERROL) and I did have Texas BBQ from Rudy's.

I went down sick. I was doing and taking everything possible before the trip to get rid of my sickness. While I was down there, I was taking Dayquil, Mucinex, took Theraflu and Nyquil on separate nights to get rid of whatever it was. Sadly, nothing worked because on the eve of the marathon (Sat., night), I threw up all my carbs I ate for brunch and dinner. I was vomiting all night 'til 2AM and had to wake up at 4AM. At 4, I decided to listen to my body and not run. This is the first time I traveled somewhere, paid for airfare, hotel and the race fees and couldn't run. It was a little upsetting, but in the long run, I'm glad I didn't do more harm to myself. There will always be races and opportunities to BQ.

And speaking of brunch, Maria hosted a group brunch at Backstreet Cafe with many of her friends that came out to support her and her husband before the marathon. They were all so nice. A few of us ordered Brioche French Toast with Nutella. It actually said "Nutella" on the menu. When our food arrived, there was no Nutella to be found in the dish. When someone asked the server about it, she replied, "it's in the sauce!" We were like... uh, I don't think so! Man, I wish I would've taken a picture. Maria was so annoyed that she thought she would get back at the restaurant by collecting the menu and giving it to me as she knows I collect them. It was bittersweet. I hid it in the Houston Marathon magazine I brought into the restaurant with me and carried it right out in the end. I like the way you think, Maria!

One cool thing to point out about the menu, in honor of David Bowie's recent passing, they created a drink called "Oh, You Pretty Things" after his song.

Tattersalls Tavern & United Global First Lounge

On our second consecutive winter trip to Europe (last year we went to Paris), we visited a place that I've always dreamed of going: London, England. I've always seen pictures and heard stories about this busy and cosmopolitan European city. I finally got to experience it for the very first time after 45 years during the Christmas season. It was magical, festive and busy alike Paris, and it was charming in its own way with so much rich history and culture. The food, however, is less than to be desired unless you want Indian food.

After shopping at Harrods, the famous department store, we decided to find a local pub to experience pub culture. Across the street, we spotted Tattersalls Tavern. At first, I thought it seemed touristy as it was across from Harrods, but after settling in and observing the crowd it was pretty popular with the locals.

The menus were standing on the table, so after ordering I waited until no one was looking (haha-I'm sure someone saw in this crowded restaurant), and since our Harrods shopping bags were near us on the floor, I grabbed one and slid the menu right into the shopping bag. The bag was big enough to fully cover the menu so that was a relief!

I was so excited to finally try fish and chips, which is the national dish of England, I think? Mince pies are also big in England, which I didn't get to try. My meal came with peas, french fries, bread, tartar sauce, lemon wedge, and some interesting curry-like gravy. Honestly, the fish was pretty good and quite large and I did enjoy it with the curry gravy. As for everything else, well... again, the fish was good and so was my New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. The service was good, people were friendly and it had a good vibe.

The interesting thing about Tattersalls is that on the menu it says "Taylor Walker". I wasn't sure who Taylor Walker is or why the actual menu didn't say "Tattersalls Tavern." Spirit Pub Company, a hospitality company in the United Kingdom, is the parent company (recently acquired by Greene King) that owns over 750+ pubs throughout the UK, including Taylor Walker brand pubs, which there are about 120 mostly in London. The name Taylor Walker is taken from the famous London brewery founded in 1730.

At the end of our trip, I was really looking forward to United's Global First Lounge at London Heathrow Airport Terminal 2 also known as The Queen's Terminal. It only caters to international first class passengers and Global Service members when flying business class.

The lounge is spacious. It had a circular enclosed dining area reserved for private dining, stylish curvy beds you can sleep on while waiting for for your flight along with curtains that you can use to shield yourself for total privacy, a ton of seating areas, professional and courteous staff, large bathrooms, a really good food and snack spread as well as top shelf beverages and spirits. On our visit, they offered take home popcorn with interesting flavors, which I took a few. I also took home a new beverage that I'm now a HUGE fan of Schweppes Bitter Lemon.

We did informal table service and I ordered scrambled eggs with bacon. Thank God for the beautiful space and service because the food was so bland. The eggs needed a lot of salt. The bacon was alright. Mark ordered an omelette, which I should've ordered because it looked better than mine. His came with a hash brown, which was also bland.

The menu is small but covers enough and has a hard cover. It offers breakfast, lunch, dinner, starters and a wine list. Since the menus were standing up on most tables and it was pretty quiet, I had no problems collecting one. I simply stuck it in my backpack. I'm glad I did and I hope the lounge stays around forever. It was a first class experience.

The Best Looking Menus in New York

A good friend of mine, Joanna C., emailed me during the holidays to show me a link that reminded her of me. She knows I am an avid collector of menus and was even an accessory to one of my collecting shenanigans. Haha-thank you, Joanna.

The link is of the Best Looking Menus in New York on Urban Daddy,  an online lifestyle website that features a best-of-the-best in major cities across the US. Upon glancing at the menus, many of them are cocktail menus and some feature food or both food and drinks, but I certainly haven't been to any of them nor even heard of many of these places. Places such as Nitecap, Genuine Liquorette, Isa, Pouring Ribbons and Fancy Nancy to name quite a few. I think my favorite menu is from Genuine Liquorette for its '70s style ad-like menu.

Genuine Liquorette
I would eventually like to visit some of the above mentioned places this year and maybe even collect some! Let's go, Joanna!

Menu from Titanic sells for $80,000

Supposedly, the Titanic menu sold is one of three or four menus from the last first-class lunch still around, so it's a pretty valuable artifact considering everyone from that tragic time period is no longer alive.

The menu featured is dated April 14, 1912. That would make if 104 years old in a few months. A few unfamiliar food items listed such as "Consomme Fermier" translates to Farmer's clear soup or vegetable broth soup and "Cockie Leekie" is chicken soup with leeks. I would have probably ordered the "Eggs a L'Argeneuil," a dish similiar to eggs benedict or "Salmon Mayonnaise," salmon baked with mayo on top. Yes, please! I found a blog online that explains what most of these dishes would be in modern day: So Good Blog.

I would love it if one of the menus I've collected sold for that much or was worth anything. Not that it would validate my "collecting" experience, but it certainly would be a nice future investment surprise.
